Organizational Framework

Program Definition and Philosophy

Counseling is an integral part of each school’s total educational program.  It is developmental by design and includes sequential activities organized and implemented by certified school counselors with the support of teachers, administrators, students, and parents.  The counseling program includes:

  >Counseling Curriculum

  >Individual Planning

  >Responsive Services

  >System Support

The counseling program is designed to address the needs of all students by helping them to acquire competencies in career planning and exploration, knowledge of self and others, and educational and vocational development.

The school district believes that the counseling program is an important and integral part of the overall educational process.  Since students develop emotionally, socially, and educationally, the counseling program must address the issue of total growth.  The program is sequential in nature.  The need for counseling begins with pre-school entrance and continues throughout life.

The K-12 developmental program is concerned with all students while recognizing the fact that individuals have needs that will continue to require special attention.  As a result, the comprehensive program is for all students and becomes developmental rather than crisis-oriented.

Program Counseling Facilities

To implement a comprehensive counseling program, it is recommended that a counseling area be established in each building. The counseling center needs to be large enough to adequately house all of the program’s personnel, resources and equipment. The center should be accessible to all students, including those with disabilities. The minimum requirements for a guidance and counseling center are:

>A well-organized display of resource materials and equipment

>Private offices, properly equipped and sound-proofed

>Adequate space for individual, small and large-group use

>Adequate storage space

Facilities that meet these requirements will increase program effectiveness, adding strength to the comprehensive counseling program. Facilities at the elementary, middle and high schools in the Warrensburg R-VI School District all meet the desired guidelines set by the Missouri Comprehensive School Counseling Program.
